Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATS) of the University of Lagos staged a peaceful protest in front of the university gate on Wednesday.
The protesters blocked vehicular movement and disrupted the flow of traffic in the surrounding area. They voiced their grievances against the federal government for withholding their salaries and displayed various placards to express their dissatisfaction.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU had been calling attention to their exclusion from the payment of withheld salaries for approximately a month. The government had initiated the payment for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in February, but the other staff unions were left out.
The salaries of these staff members were withheld due to the implementation of a “No Work, No Pay” policy by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2022, ASUU, SSANU, and NAATS conducted strikes that lasted for eight months, four months, and five and a half months, respectively. In response, this policy was implemented.
In addition to the ongoing protest, NAATS has also commenced a three-day warning strike today to further amplify their demands.
