The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenged the results of the Edo State governorship election, which declared All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo as the new governor. Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, heading the Edo State Governorship Election National Campaign Council, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of violating the Electoral Act.
Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata, who got 22,763 votes. The APC won in 10 of the state’s 18 Local Government Areas, while the PDP won in eight. The PDP, insisting that Ighodalo won based on polling unit results, accused the APC of manipulating the numbers with INEC’s collusion.
The PDP Governors Forum urged INEC to respect the voters’ wishes and called for the accurate announcement of results. In response, the APC celebrated Okpebholo’s victory and called for unity and service. President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Okpebholo, encouraging him to address the development issues in Edo State.
PDP’s protests included allegations of vote inflation, manipulation, and discrepancies between polling unit results and final tallies. The PDP demanded a re-collation of votes and hinted at possible legal action. Meanwhile, Governor Godwin Obaseki urged citizens to remain calm and peaceful, emphasizing the significance of democratic processes and legal recourse for grievances.
