Thohoyandou, South Africa An Easter Sunday service at a local church took a devastating turn after the congregation’s worship leader was fatally shot on site.
Sources confirm the incident occurred around 6pm at the Makonde Shadani Non-Denominational chapel. Reverend Funanani Mbedzi, 38, was leading worship when her husband suddenly entered with a licensed firearm.
Members of the 100-strong congregation looked on in horror as the suspect opened fire, striking Mbedzi multiple times before fleeing the scene. Emergency services rushed the beloved worship pastor to Thohoyandou Nazareth Hospital but she did not survive her injuries.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba of the South African Police Service confirms the shooting is being investigated as a domestic murder. “The motive remains unclear but we are considering the possibility of a marital dispute turning deadly,” he said.
The suspect surrendered himself to the police two days after evading arrest. His firearm was confiscated as evidence. No other details have been provided to protect the integrity of the ongoing inquiry.
